It counts the number of full years that fit in the gap, then the remaining months, then the remaining days — the same way you would naturally describe someone's age. Because calendar months have different lengths and leap years add a day every four years, a precise age gap can't be found by simple subtraction of years alone. This tool accounts for both, so the result is exact for any two dates you enter — in either order.
